On Line Friend

I had some free time, so what did I do?
I checked the computer to see if I’d heard from you!

I used to walk out to a box to retrieve mail.
But I’d rather get it instantly, than wait on the snail!

Checking my e-mail is always fun!
I usually get a joke or greeting from someone.

I feel so blessed because on the other end,
I know I’ve connected with a friend!

When I’ve had a hard day and need to share,
Here I can find a friend who will listen and care.

And to this friend I hope I’ve let them know
That I am always there for them also!

Isn’t it a strange kind of bond we form?
It isn’t exactly like the “norm”!

But, where is it written, face to face we must be,
For you to be a very good friend to me??

That little joke or note, or just a simple “Hi”,
Could be like a ray of sunshine from the sky!

So my online pals, this is dedicated to you,
For all the smiles you have made anew!

May our friendship continue to grow,
And the warmth we feel continue to flow!

Always remember this…
A smile is such an easy thing to pass along the way,
Like a ray of summer sunshine,
On a somewhat gloomy day!!

Thank you for being my Online Friend!!!

Cellular memory

Posted on May 26, 2009 by juwonoh.

Cellular memory is the hypothesis that such things as memories, habits, interests, and tastes may somehow be stored in all the cells of human bodies, not only in the brain.

The suggestion is based largely around anecdotal evidence of organ transplants after which the recipient was reported to have developed new habits or memories.

Reports

An article published in 2000 in Integrative Medicine, a short lived alternative therapy journal, reported stories of organ recipients who “inherited” such traits as a love for classical music, a change of sexual orientation, and changes in diet and vocabulary. To date, no case where personality traits or memories have been passed from donor to recipient following an organ transplant has ever been recorded in a peer reviewed medical or scientific journal.

In fiction

In an episode of The Simpsons titled “Treehouse of Horror IX,” Homer Simpson gets a hair and scalp transplant from executed murderer Snake Jailbird. The hair literally takes control of Homer, causing him to go on a killing spree.

Cellular memory plays a large role in the science fiction series Dune. Several characters undergo transformations which unlock cellular memories of their ancestors, enabling them to relive at will the lives of those who came before them.

In the 1991 film “Body Parts“, Bill Chrushank (Played by Jeff Fahey) loses his arm in a car accident and a criminal psychologist has it replaced with a limb that belonged to a serial killer. This causes Bill Chrushank’s personality to change into that of the serial killer.

The 2008 film The Eye starring Jessica Alba and the novel Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult all feature the concept of cellular memory.

The video game Assassin’s Creed features a similar concept known as Genetic memory.

In the Metal Gear Solid video game series, the antagonist Revolver Ocelot receives a transplanted hand from another character, Liquid Snake, and takes on a new persona as Liquid Ocelot.

Shocking examples of cellular memory

Professor Gary Schwartz’s findings are backed up by Dr Paul Pearsall, author of The Heart’s Code, a book dealing with the same phenomenon.

Their casebook also includes:

  • A woman who was terrified of heights until she was given the lungs of a mountain climber. Dottie O’Connor, from Massachusetts, is now a climber.
  • A seven-year-old girl had nightmares about being killed after being given the heart of a child who had been murdered.
  • Paul Oldam, a lawyer from Milwaukee, received the heart of a 14-year-old boy and inherited his craving for Snickers.
  • And a man of 25 received a woman’s heart and, to his girlfriend’s delight, now wants to go shopping all the time.

Man given heart of suicide victim marries donor’s widow and then kills himself in exactly the same way

A man who received the transplanted heart of a suicide victim has killed himself in exactly the same way.

And, astonishingly, the same wife is mourning all over again.

Sonny Graham, who had received Terry Cottle’s heart, also went on to marry his widow.

Scroll down for more…

Sonny GrahamHeart transplant recipient Sonny Graham, pictured with wife Cheryl, commited suicide

The couple met after Mr Graham started writing to her after being told her husband was his heart donor.

Twelve years after the successful transplant operation, Mr Graham shot himself dead, leaving his wife a widow for the second time in strikingly similar circumstances.

Friends said Mrs Graham, a nurse, is stunned by the bizarre turn of events.

Officials in Vidalia, Georgia, said Mr Graham, 69, died after shooting himself in the throat with a shotgun.

He was found in a garage at the home the couple shared.

In 1995, Mr Graham had been on the verge of death due to congestive heart failure.

He had less than six months to live when the call came through from the Medical University of South Carolina, telling him that a heart had just become available.

It belonged to Mr Cottle, 33, who had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

Mr Graham went to the hospital from his home nearby and the heart was transplanted that day.

He did not know the identity of the donor, only that the heart belonged to a 33-year-old man.

A year later, Mr Graham contacted the organ donation agency wanting to thank the man’s family for the gift of life.

He began writing to Mr Cottle’s young widow Cheryl, a mother of four. The couple later met, fell in love, married and moved to Georgia.

Speaking shortly after their wedding, Mrs Graham said: “It helped me so much.

“Meeting Sonny made it easier for me, knowing something so good came from something so bad.”

Friends of Mr Graham said he had not shown any signs of being depressed.

Scientists say there are more than 70 documented cases of transplant patients having personality changes as they take on some of the characteristics of the donor.

Last month, a woman from Lancashire claimed her literary tastes changed radically following a kidney transplant.

Cheryl Johnson used to enjoy celebrity biographies and best sellers such as The Da Vinci Code.

But now she prefers classics such as Jane Austen’s Persuasion and Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.

Character changes in transplant recipients are known as cellular memory phenomenon.

However, medical experts are sceptical about the concept and insist there is little convincing evidence.

Jocelyn Wildenstein

Jocelyn Wildenstein, born Jocelynnys Dayannys da Silva Bezerra otherwise known as Jocelyn Cano (August 5, 1940, in Lausanne, Switzerland) is a wealthy socialite who has frequently been seen in the tabloid press because of her numerous cosmetic surgeries.[1][2] Her appearance has led to the press giving her a lot of nicknames. Wildenstein has reportedly spent $4,000,000 (£2,746,216) on cosmetic surgery over the years[3]. In 2004 she was named the world’s scariest celebrity on British tabloid the Daily Mails website.[4] Talk show host Craig Ferguson often uses a photo of her as part of a comedy bit on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, proclaiming her picture to be that of singer Kenny Rogers, who has also undergone plastic surgery.

Personal life

Jocelyn grew up in a wealthy family of Brazilian ancestry in Lausanne, Switzerland where she became a skilled hunter and pilot, which led to her being invited to a shooting weekend at the 66,000 acres private Kenyan game reserve of billionaire international art dealer Alec Wildenstein, son of Daniel Wildenstein, the owner of Wildenstein & Co., one of the world’s largest and most successful art conglomerates. Within a year, Jocelyn and Alec were married in Las Vegas. The couple became famous for their lavish, extravagant lifestyle, allegedly spending as much as $1,000,000 monthly. In interviews, she admitted to purchasing gowns worth $350,000. They maintained several homes, including a five-story townhouse on Park Avenue in New York, a house in Lausanne, a Paris flat, a French château; a Caribbean beach house; and the Kenyan ranch. The couple had two children. A lover of exotic animals, Jocelyn kept a capuchin monkey which traveled with the couple on their private jet, and a pack of five Italian greyhounds. She is known to have received several silicone injections to the lips, cheeks, and chin along with a facelift and eye reconstruction to appear more “feline”. Her eyelids were pulled up and back, giving them a more feline shape. This is also why she has been given the nickname “the real cat woman”.

After many years of marriage, Alec allegedly began an affair. In response, around the age of 50, Jocelyn began undergoing a series of plastic surgeries. Alec began an affair with a Russian fashion model, and pointed a gun at his wife when she confronted him, for which he was briefly jailed. Divorce proceedings were initiated, but neither partner would agree to vacate the New York townhouse that was their main home, and they drew up a plan dividing the premises. Jocelyn found her retinue of servants reduced to one, and was denied access to the jet. She sued Alec for $200 million, and tens of millions in art and homes. She also demanded interim support of $200,000 per month. According to court documents of the divorce proceedings, Alec said that “[I] couldn’t even recognize my own wife up close. She seems to think that you fix a face the same way you fix a house.” Jocelyn was ultimately awarded tens of millions of dollars in the divorce. She also auctioned an estimated $10 million of jewelry given to her by Alec and devoted herself to New York social life. In July 2000, the couple reportedly reunited. However, by 2008, she was in a relationship with the fashion designer Lloyd Klein, according to an interview the two gave on Entertainment Tonight. Alec Wildenstein died on 18 February 2008 from cancer.

Solomon Shereshevskii

(Redirected from S.V. Shereshevskii)

Solomon Veniaminovich Shereshevskii (1886 - 1958) (Russian: Соломон Шерешевский), also known simply as ‘S’ (’Ш’), was a Russian journalist and mnemonist active in the 1920s. He became famous after an anecdotal event in which he was told off for not taking any notes while attending a speech in the mid-1920s. To the astonishment of everyone there (and to his own also, due to his belief that everybody had such an ability to recall), he could recall the speech perfectly, word by word.

Studies

Shereshevskii participated in many behavioral studies, most of them carried by the neuropsychologist Alexander Luria over a thirty year time span. Shereshevskii was asked to memorize complex mathematical formulae, huge matrices and even poems in foreign languages and did so in a matter of minutes. Despite his astounding memory performance, Shereshevskii scored absolutely average in intelligence tests.

Based on his studies, Luria diagnosed Shereshevskii as having an extremely strong version of synaesthesia, five-fold synaesthesia, in which the stimulation of one of his senses produces a reaction in every other. For example, if Shereshevskii heard a musical tone played he would immediately see a colour, touch would trigger a taste sensation and so on for each of the senses. With the images his synaesthesia produced, he could apply well-known mnemonic techniques. For example, when thinking about numbers he reported:

‘Take the number 1. This is a proud, well-built man; 2 is a high-spirited woman; 3 a gloomy person; 6 a man with a swollen foot; 7 a man with a moustache; 8 a very stout woman - a sack within a sack. As for the number 87, what I see is a fat woman and a man twirling his moustache.’ [1]

Problems

There is no doubt he had an active imagination, which helped him generate useful mnemonics. Unfortunately for him, his condition often produced unnecessary and distracting images or feelings. He had trouble memorizing things which weren’t literal in meaning, and had trouble recognizing faces, which he saw as “very changeable”. He also occasionally had problems reading, as the written words evoked distracting sensations. Things were far worse when he, for example, ate while reading. An example of the difficulties he faced in daily life can be seen in this quotation:

‘One time I went to buy some ice cream… I walked over to the vendor and asked her what kind of ice cream she had. ‘Fruit ice cream,’ she said. But she answered in such a tone that a whole pile of coals, of black cinders, came bursting out of her mouth, and I couldn’t bring myself to buy any ice cream after she had answered in that way …’ [2]

His mnemonic associations were so strong that it is said he could recall them after many years. After he discovered his own abilities, he performed as a mnemonist but this created confusion in his mind. He went as far as writing things down in a paper and burning it, so he could see the words in cinders, in a desperate attempt to forget them. Reportedly, in his late years, he realized he could forget facts with just a conscious desire to remove them from his memory, although this isn’t well verified.

As I’ve Matured

I’ve learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is
stalk them and hope they panic and give in…

I’ve learned that one good turn gets most of the blankets.

I’ve learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just
jackasses.

I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust, and it only takessuspicion, not proof, to destroy it.

I’ve learned that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.

I’ve learned that you shouldn’t compare yourself to others -
they are more screwed up than you
think.

I’ve learned thatdepression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

I’ve learned that it is not what you wear; it is how you take it off.

I’ve learned that you can keep vomiting long after you think you’re finished.

I’ve learned to not sweat the petty things, andnot pet the sweaty things.

I’ve learned that ex’s are like fungus, and keep coming back.

I’ve learned age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

I’ve learned that I don’t suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

I’ve learned that we are responsible for what we do,
unless we are celebrities.

I’ve learned that artificial intelligence is no match for natural
stupidity.

I’ve learned that 99% of the time when something isn’t working
in your house, one of your kids did it

I’ve learned that there is a fine line between genius and insanity.

I’ve learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon andall the less important ones just never go away.
And the real pains in the ass are permanent.

Pass this along to 5 friends…trust me, they’ll appreciate it.

Gall Stone

Posted on March 23, 2009 by juwonoh.

It was a successful gallstone surgery operation last week at Kwangju Christian Hospital, the third to the biggest and well known for the operation of Thyroid Goiter here in Kwangju by a Laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery.I have two puncture holes in the right stomach, one in the navel and one in the chest.

the stones in my gall bladder that gave lots of pain in me.Dark greenish in color and 1.6 cm in size.

Gallstone

In medicine, gallstones (choleliths) are crystalline bodies formed within the body by accretion or concretion of normal or abnormal bile component.

Gallstones can occur anywhere within the biliary tree, including the gallbladderbile duct. Obstruction of the common bile duct is choledocholithiasis; obstruction of the biliary tree can cause jaundice; obstruction of the outlet of the pancreatic exocrine system can cause pancreatitis. Cholelithiasis is the presence of stones in the gallbladder or bile ducts: chole- means “bile”, lithia means “stone“, and -sis means “process”.

Characteristics

A gallstone’s size varies and may be as small as a sand grain or as large as a golf ball. The gallbladder may develop a single, often large stone or many smaller ones. They may occur in any part of the biliary system.

Content

Gallstones

Gallstones have different appearance, depending on their contents. On the basis of their contents, gallstones can be subdivided into the two following types:

  • Cholesterol stones are usually green, but are sometimes white or yellow in color. They are made primarily of cholesterol and account for 80 percent of gallstones.

Mixed stones

Mixed stones account for the majority of stones. Most of these are a mixture of cholesterol and calcium salts. Because of their calcium content, they can often be visualized radiographically.

Pseudolithiasis

A.k.a., “Fake stone” Sludge-like gallbladder secretions that act like a stone.

Causes

Researchers believe that gallstones may be caused by a combination of factors, including inherited body chemistry, body weight, gallbladder motility (movement), and perhaps diet. Additionally, people with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) are at increased risk to develop gallstones.[1]

Cholesterol gallstones develop when bile contains too much cholesterol and not enough bile salts. Besides a high concentration of cholesterol, two other factors seem to be important in causing gallstones. The first is how often and how well the gallbladder contracts; incomplete and infrequent emptying of the gallbladder may cause the bile to become overconcentrated and contribute to gallstone formation. The second factor is the presence of proteins in the liver and bile that either promote or inhibit cholesterol crystallization into gallstones.

In addition, increased levels of the hormone estrogen as a result of pregnancy, hormone therapy, or the use of combined (estrogen-containing) forms of hormonal contraception, may increase cholesterol levels in bile and also decrease gallbladder movement, resulting in gallstone formation.

No clear relationship has been proven between diet and gallstone formation. However, low-fibre, high-cholesterol diets, and diets high in starchy foods have been suggested as contributing to gallstone formation. Other nutritional factors that may increase risk of gallstones include rapid weight loss, constipation, eating fewer meals per day, eating less fish, and low intakes of the nutrients folate, magnesium, calcium, and vitamin C.[2] On the other hand, wine and whole grain bread may decrease the risk of gallstones.[3]

The common mnemonic for gallstone risk factors refer to the “four F’s”: fat (i.e., overweight), forty (an age near or above 40), female, and fertile (pre-menopausal);[4] a fifth F, fair is sometimes added to indicate that the condition is more prevalent in Caucasians. The absence of these risk factors does not, however, preclude the formation of gallstones.

Interestingly, a lack of melatonin could significantly contribute to gallbladder stones, as melatonin both inhibits cholesterol secretion from the gallbladder, enhances the conversion of cholesterol to bile, and is an antioxidant, capable of reducing oxidative stress to the gallbladder.[5]

Symptoms

Gallstones usually remain asymptomatic initially.[6] They start developing symptoms once the stones reach a certain size (>8mm).[7] A main symptom of gallstones is commonly referred to as a gallstone “attack”, also known as biliary colic, in which a person will experience intense pain in the upper abdominal region that steadily increases for approximately thirty minutes to several hours. A patient may also encounter pain in the back, ordinarily between the shoulder blades, or pain under the right shoulder. In some cases, the pain develops in the lower region of the abdomen, nearer to the pelvis, but this is less common.[citation needed] Nausea and vomiting may occur. Patients characteristically exhibit a positive Murphy’s sign: the patient is instructed to breathe in while the gall bladder is deeply palpated. If the gallbladder is inflamed, the patient will abruptly stop inhaling due to the pain, a positive Murphy’s sign.

These attacks are sharp and intensely painful, similar to that of a kidney stone attack. Often, attacks occur after a particularly fatty meal and almost always happen at night. Other symptoms include abdominal bloating, intolerance of fatty foods, belching, gas, and indigestion. If the above symptoms coincide with chills, lowgrade fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and/or clay-colored stool, a doctor should be consulted immediately.[8]

Some people who have gallstones are asymptomatic and do not feel any pain or discomfort. These gallstones are called “silent stones” and do not affect the gallbladder or other internal organs. They do not need treatment.[8]

Treatment

Medical options

Cholesterol gallstones can sometimes be dissolved by oral ursodeoxycholic acid, but it may be required that the patient takes this medication for up to two years[9]. Gallstones may recur however, once the drug is stopped. Obstruction of the common bile duct with gallstones can sometimes be relieved by endoscopic retrograde sphincterotomy (ERS) following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Gallstones can be broken up using a procedure called lithotripsy (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy)[9], which is a method of concentrating ultrasonic shock waves onto the stones to break them into tiny pieces. They are then passed safely in the feces. However, this form of treatment is only suitable when there are a small number of gallstones.

Surgical options

Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) has a 99% chance of eliminating the recurrence of cholelithiasis. Only symptomatic patients must be indicated to surgery. The lack of a gall bladder does not seem to have any negative consequences in many people. However, there is a significant proportion of the population, between 5-40%, who develop a condition called postcholecystectomy syndrome.[10]Symptoms include gastrointestinal distress and persistent pain in the upper right abdomen. As many as twenty percent of patients develop chronic diarrhea.[11]

There are two surgery options: open procedure and laparoscopic: see the cholecystectomy article for more details.

  • Open cholecystectomy procedure: This involves a large incision into the abdomen (laparotomy) below the right lower ribs. A week of hospitalization, normal diet a week after release and normal activity a month after release.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: Three to four small puncture holes for camera and instruments (available since the 1980s). Typically same-day release or one night hospital stay, followed by a week of home rest and pain medication. Can resume normal diet and light activity a week after release. (Decreased energy level and minor residual pain for a month or two.) Studies have shown that this procedure is as effective as the more invasive open cholecystectomy, provided the stones are accurately located by cholangiogram prior to the procedure so that they can all be removed. The procedure also has the benefit of reducing operative complications such as bowel perforation and vascular injury.

Since ancient times people have revered stones, gems and crystals. Jewelry and amulets have been found in in buriel sites thousands of years old. Mystics have taught of the benefits of stones for various physical problems, as well as how and when to use them for protection, guidence and healing. Edgar Cayce, one of our most famous mystics said that gems` real value lies in the fact that they are essentially the same material as the soul. Stones are also mentioned  in the Bible. There is a sympathic vibration between us and the stones. The entire world is created of atomic forces.  Stones are enriched with decomposed matter and they then nourish the plants that feed and shelter us. When our ATTITUDE is correct and the stone is in harmony with us, their vibrations and color can aid us consciously and unconciously to find guidence for our problems.

In choosing your stone go with your first choice. As you pass your hand over a selection you will feel/sense which one is right for you.

It is important to clean your stones off previous handlers vibrations. The best way to do this is to pass them lightly through the smoke of incense or with running water. As you do so, ask that they be cleansed of all disharmony and filled with unconditional love.

PHILIPPINE DELICACIES(필리핀 요리)

The Philippines country culture starts in a tropical climate divided into rainy and dry seasons and an archipelago with 7,000 islands. These isles contain the Cordillera mountains; Luzon뭩 central plains; Palawan뭩 coral reefs; seas touching the world뭩 longest discontinuous coastline; and a multitude of lakes, rivers, springs, and brooks.

The population?20 different ethnic groups and the mainstream communities of Tagalog/Ilocano/Pampango/Pangasinan and Visayan lowlanders뾵orked within a gentle but lush environment. In it they shaped their own lifeways: building houses, weaving cloth, telling and writing stories, ornamenting and decorating, preparing food.

The Chinese who came to trade sometimes stayed on. Perhaps they cooked the noodles of home; certainly they used local condiments; surely they taught their Filipino wives their dishes, and thus Filipino-Chinese food came to be. The names identify them: pansit (Hokkien for something quickly cooked) are noodles; lumpia are vegetables rolled in edible wrappers; siopao are steamed, filled buns; siomai are dumplings.

All, of course, came to be indigenized뾈ilipinized by the ingredients and by local tastes. Today, for example, Pansit Malabon has oysters and squid, since Malabon is a fishing center; and Pansit Marilao is sprinkled with rice crisps, because the town is within the Luzon rice bowl.

When restaurants were established in the 19th century, Chinese food became a staple of the pansiterias, with the food given Spanish names for the ease of the clientele: this comida China (Chinese food) includes arroz caldo (rice and chicken gruel); and morisqueta tostada (fried rice).

When the Spaniards came, the food influences they brought were from both Spain and Mexico, as it was through the vice-royalty of Mexico that the Philippines were governed. This meant the production of food for an elite, nonfood-producing class, and a food for which many ingredients were not locally available.

Fil-Hispanic food had new flavors and ingredients뾬live oil, paprika, saffron, ham, cheese, cured sausages뾞nd new names. Paella, the dish cooked in the fields by Spanish workers, came to be a festive dish combining pork, chicken, seafood, ham, sausages and vegetables, a luxurious mix of the local and the foreign. Relleno, the process of stuffing festive capons and turkeys for Christmas, was applied to chickens, and even to bangus, the silvery milkfish. Christmas, a new feast for Filipinos that coincided with the rice harvest, came to feature not only the myriad native rice cakes, but also ensaymadas (brioche-like cakes buttered, sugared and cheese-sprinkled) to dip in hot thick chocolate, and the apples, oranges, chestnuts and walnuts of European Christmases. Even the Mexican corn tamal turned Filipino, becoming rice-based tamales wrapped in banana leaves. The Americans introduced to the Philippine cuisine the ways of convenience: pressure-cooking, freezing, pre-cooking, sandwiches and salads; hamburgers, fried chicken and steaks.

Add to the above other cuisines found in the country along with other global influences: French, Italian, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese. They grow familiar, but remain 밿mported?and not yet indigenized.

On a buffet table today one might find, for example, kinilaw na tanguingue, mackerel dressed with vinegar, ginger, onions, hot peppers, perhaps coconut milk; also grilled tiger shrimp, and maybe sinigang na baboy, pork and vegetables in a broth soured with tamarind, all from the native repertoire. Alongside there would almost certainly be pansit, noodles once Chinese, now Filipino, still in a sweet-sour sauce. Spanish festive fare like morcon (beef rolls), embutido (pork rolls), fish escabeche and stuffed chicken or turkey might be there too. The centerpiece would probably be lechon, spit-roasted pig, which may be Chinese or Polynesian in influence, but bears a Spanish name, and may therefore derive from cochinillo asado. Vegetable dishes could include an American salad and a pinakbet (vegetables and shrimp paste). The dessert table would surely be richly Spanish: leche flan (caramel custard), natilla, yemas, dulces de naranja, membrillo, torta del rey, etc., but also include local fruits in syrup (coconut, santol, guavas) and American cakes and pies. The global village may be reflected in shawarma and pasta. The buffet table and Filipino food today is thus a gastronomic telling of Philippine history.

What really is Philippine food, then? Indigenous food from land and sea, field and forest. Also and of course: dishes and culinary procedures from China, Spain, Mexico, and the United States, and more recently from further abroad.

What makes them Philippine? The history and society that introduced and adapted them; the people who turned them to their tastes and accepted them into their homes and restaurants, and especially the harmonizing culture that combined them into contemporary Filipino fare.

I’VE LEARNED

I’VE LEARNED

I’ve learned
that you cannot make someone love you.
All you can do is
be someone who can be loved.
The rest is up to them.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that no matter how much I care,
some people just don’t care back.

bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that it takes years to build up trust,
and only seconds to destroy it.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that it’s not what you have in your life
but who you have in your life that counts.

bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that you can get by on charm
for about fifteen minutes.
After that, you’d better know something.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that you shouldn’t compare
yourself to the best others can do
but to the best you can do.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that it’s not what happens to people
that’s important. It’s what they do about it.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that you can do something in an instant
that will give you heartache for life.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that no matter how thin you slice it,
there are always two sides.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that it’s taking me a long time
to become the person I want to be.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that it’s a lot easier
to react than it is to think.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that you should always leave
loved ones withloving words.
It may be the last time you see them.

bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that you can keep going
long after you think you can’t.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that we are responsible for what we do,
no matter how we feel.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that either you control your attitude
or it controls you.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that regardless of how hot and steamy
a relationship is at first,
the passion fades and there had better be
something else to take its place.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that heroes are the people
who do what has to be done
when it needs to be done,
regardless of the consequences.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that learning to forgive takes practice.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that there are people who love you dearly,
but just don’t know how to show it.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that my best friend and I can do anything
or nothing and have the best time.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that sometimes the people you expect
to kick you when you’re down
will be the ones to help you get back up.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that sometimes when I’m angry
I have the right to be angry,
but that doesn’t give me
the right to be cruel.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that true friendship continues to grow,
even over the longest distance.
Same goes for true love.

bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that just because someone doesn’t love you
the way you want them to doesn’t mean
they don’t love you with all they have.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that maturity has more to do with
what types of experiences you’ve had
and what you’ve learned from them
and less to do with how many
birthdays you’ve celebrated.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned _
that you should never tell a child
their dreams are unlikely or outlandish.
Few things are more humiliating, and
what a tragedy it would be
if they believed it.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that your family won’t always
be there for you. It may seem funny,
but people you aren’t related to
can take care of you and love you
and teach you to trust people again.
Families aren’t biological.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that no matter how good a friend is,
they’re going to hurt you
every once in a while
and you must forgive them for that.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that it isn’t always enough
to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes you have to learn
to forgive yourself.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that no matter how bad
your heart is broken
the world doesn’t stop for your grief.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that our background and circumstances
may have influenced who we are,
but we are responsible for who we become.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that sometimes when my friends fight,
I’m forced to choose sides
even when I don’t want to.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that just because two people argue,
it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other
And just because they don’t argue,
it doesn’t mean they do.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that sometimes you have to put
the individual ahead of their actions.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that we don’t have to change friends
if we understand that friends change.

bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that you shouldn’t be so
eager to find out a secret.
It could change your life forever.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that two people can look
at the exact same thing
and see something totally different.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that no matter how you try to protect
your children, they will eventually get hurt
and you will hurt in the process.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that there are many ways of falling
and staying in love.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that no matter the consequences,
those who are honest with themselves
get farther in life.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that no matter how many friends you have,
if you are their pillar you will feel lonely
and lost at the times you need them most.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)

I’ve learned -
that your life can be changed
in a matter of hours
by people who don’t even know you.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that even when you think
you have no more to give,
when a friend cries out to you,
you will find the strength to help.

bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that writing, as well as talking,
can ease emotional pains.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that the paradigm we live in
is not all that is offered to us.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that credentials on the wall
do not make you a decent human being.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that the people you care most about in life
are taken from you too soon.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that although the word “love”
can have many different meanings,
it loses value when overly used.
bvine1.gif (18178 bytes)
I’ve learned -
that it’s hard to determine
where to draw the line
between being nice and
not hurting people’s feelings
and standing up for what you believe.

SHORT STORIES ON LINE

1. The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne

http://www.readbookonline.net/readOnLine/1777/

The eternal question…can the human being through science become a god? That has been around for ages…and we are still not gods (fortunately!)

2.  The Brothers  by Louisa May Alcott

http://www.readbookonline.net/readOnLine/96/

The author of the famous novel "Little Women" brings us a short story in which a man has to choose between revenge or mercy in a world where slavery was still present… This is no Little Women!

3.  The Unicorn in the Garden by James Thurber

http://english.glendale.cc.ca.us/unicorn1.html

In a child-like style, this story shows us an unhappy couple and how the incredible appearance of a unicorn makes tensions explode.  Was the unicorn real?  You will have to decide.

4.  There will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury

http://www.nexuslearning.net/books/Holt-EOL2/Collection%203/softrains.htm

A story in which the big star is…a house???  The House of the Future!!  This is the house everyone wants..an intelligent and fully automated one!  Taken from The Martian Chronicles, a good book, by the way.
